Former Ghana captain and 2010 BBC African Player of the Year, Asamoah Gyan, has shared an emotional moment involving Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku during a difficult period in his life.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) officially unveiled Asamoah Gyan on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as an ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and colts football development.
The colourful ceremony, held at the Pelican Hotel, attracted several football legends and entertainment personalities, including Anthony Baffoe, Stephen Appiah, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, and Prince Tagoe. Popular music duo DopeNation also thrilled guests with an energetic performance.
Speaking at the event, Asamoah Gyan recounted a private conversation he had with Kurt Okraku during a challenging moment in his life, revealing how the GFA boss encouraged him to remain strong and focused.
“I had a one-on-one conversation with him (Kurt Okraku). I wasn’t myself at that time. If all of you could identify, I stayed away from social media for some time,” Gyan said.
According to the former Black Stars striker, Kurt Okraku encouraged him not to isolate himself and reminded him of the important role he still has to play in Ghana football.
“What he said was, ‘Asamoah, we have a lot to do, don’t do this to yourself,’” he added.
The appointment of Asamoah Gyan as an ambassador is expected to strengthen football development initiatives in Ghana, particularly at the grassroots and youth levels, while also inspiring the next generation of footballers in the country
