The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been formally informed of the election of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The notification was delivered by the Ashanti Regional Campaign Team of Dr Bawumia during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year, held at the Manhyia Palace on February 1.
The delegation was led by the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr Kwame Ayew Afriyie.
Addressing the Asantehene on behalf of the team, Dr Ayew Afriyie attributed Dr Bawumia’s victory in the party’s presidential primaries to the prayers, goodwill, and blessings of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He described the outcome as a testament to the Asantehene’s enduring support for the NPP and its leadership.
“Yesterday, the NPP went to the polls and elected his son,” Dr Ayew Afriyie remarked, adding that arrangements would be made for Dr Bawumia to pay a formal courtesy call on the Asantehene upon his return from an announced leave of absence.
The delegation also appealed for the continued guidance and blessings of the Asantehene as the party intensifies its activities in the Ashanti Region and across the country ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia emerged victorious in the NPP presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, securing the party’s mandate to lead it into the next general election.
