GFA Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Head Coach Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz takes over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March after back-to-back friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.

The decision, confirmed by the GFA Executive Council following consultations with key stakeholders, brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the national team.

At 73, Queiroz arrives with a wealth of experience in international football. His impressive résumé includes coaching roles at top clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as managing national teams across Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.

His vast World Cup experience is considered a significant boost for Ghana’s ambitions. Queiroz previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

He is expected to begin work immediately, focusing on evaluating the current squad, assembling his technical team, and fine-tuning preparations for the global tournament.

The new coach is set to meet the Black Stars squad next month during an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth appearance at the World Cup, will compete in Group L at the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
