Ghana’s Black Queens kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa in their Group C opener.
Despite a bright start and near goals from Grace Asantewaa and Doris Boaduwaa, Ghana fell behind after Linda Motlhalo converted a 29th-minute penalty. Jermaine Seoposenwe added a second just four minutes later.
The Black Queens continued to press in the second half, hitting the crossbar twice through Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu.
Substitute Princess Marfo also forced a fine save, but Ghana couldn’t find the net. They now face Mali and Tanzania in must-win matches as they seek to progress from the group stage in their first WAFCON appearance since 2018.
