The Ghana Police Service has restored calm at Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region following an attempted security breach at the Newmont mining site on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

According to a statement from the Police, the incident involved individuals allegedly attempting to steal gold from the site. The operation to contain the situation resulted in the death of three persons and injuries to four others.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, coordinated efforts with the Regional Police team through the night, engaging community leaders and the youth to stabilize the situation. As of this morning, there have been no reports of reprisals or further escalations in the community.

A special investigation team has been dispatched from Accra to probe the incident, while additional reinforcements have been sent to ensure peace and order in the area.

The Police have confirmed that the three deceased victims are Muslims and are working with the families to release the bodies for burial later today in accordance with Islamic traditions.

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm as they continue efforts to maintain law and order.
