
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially declared the winner of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, securing his place as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia polled 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, surpassing the threshold required under the NPP constitution for the election of a presidential candidate.

The party’s constitution stipulates that a candidate must obtain more than 50 per cent of valid votes to be duly elected.
The results were confirmed by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra after the successful collation of results from all 277 constituencies across the country.
According to the EC, a total of 196,462 votes were cast nationwide, with 561 ballots rejected.
Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent. He was followed by former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, who secured 36,303 votes, equivalent to 18.53 per cent.
Former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, obtained 1,999 votes, accounting for 1.02 per cent, while former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, polled 402 votes, representing 0.21 per cent.
The keenly contested primaries were held across all 16 regions of Ghana, with more than 211,000 delegates voting at over 300 polling centres nationwide to select a candidate to lead the NPP’s bid to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia contested the race alongside four other aspirants: Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, and businessman and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
