2025 AFCON: Algeria Edge DR Congo in Extra Time to Reach Quarter-Finals

Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic late extra-time winner from Adil Boulbina sealed a 1–0 victory over DR Congo.

In a tense and tightly contested match in Rabat, substitute Ramiz Zerrouki split the DR Congo defence with a clever pass down the left, finding Boulbina in stride.

The youngster accelerated past a weary Aaron Wan-Bissaka, cut inside with precision, and fired a powerful right-footed strike that soared beyond goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, crashing off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

The defeat was a cruel blow for the Congolese, who had matched Algeria throughout the encounter and appeared destined for a penalty shootout after a disciplined defensive display. Despite their resilience, Boulbina’s moment of brilliance proved decisive.

Chances were scarce throughout the match as both backlines maintained firm control. Among the spectators was French football legend Zinedine Zidane, watching as his son, Luca Zidane, kept his fourth clean sheet of the tournament—continuing Algeria’s outstanding defensive record.

With their backline in imperious form, the 2019 champions will head into their quarter-final clash against a free-scoring Nigeria full of confidence. The two sides face off on Saturday in Marrakesh at 16:00 GMT.
