Frustration has taken over the Kumasi City Market, as the Kumasi City Market Traders Union (KCMTU) issued a scathing indictment of the market’s management architecture demanding a complete overhaul after years of alleged mismanagement that has accrued and multi million debt to the facility.
The traders claim Kejetia Market is plagued by a laundry list of woes, ranging from billing irregularities and faulty meters to crumbling structures and overall mismanagement.
Allegations that the current management was deemed so incompetent that electricity authorities refused to even meet with them to discuss the market’s staggering debt.
In a stunning turn of events, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) reportedly agreed to meet only with the KCMTU leadership for negotiations, which influenced the end of the recent power out Since then, the Union, through its efforts, led by Nana Anim Akari II ( Francos) and Chairman Johnson Kwabena Ankrah, have tirelessly slashed over 10 million Ghana cedis off the outstanding 23 million debt.
The KCMTU took their demands for change directly to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, at a recent meeting. Speaking after the meeting, the traders declared they would continue to advocate for their welfare, demanding drastic changes.
While acknowledging the complex issues facing the market, the Minister has directed an interim 3 member committee to steer affairs as plans are rife for investigation and finding practical solutions.
