Majority Leader Ayariga Says Ghana’s Parliament Ranks Among Africa’s Most Open Legislatures.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has described Ghana’s Parliament as one of the most open and transparent legislatures on the African continent, revealing that the country currently ranks second in Africa for parliamentary openness and public accessibility.

According to him, Parliament’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and citizen participation are beginning to yield positive results.

These reforms include expanded media access, improved public engagement initiatives, and the live broadcast of parliamentary proceedings.

Speaking during a Leadership Media Briefing held on Friday, May 22, 2026, following the resumption of parliamentary sittings, Mr. Ayariga said Ghana has made significant progress in promoting openness within its legislative processes.

“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he stated.

Mr. Ayariga further explained that comparisons among African legislatures often take into account whether countries operate unicameral or bicameral parliamentary systems.

He noted that Ghana runs a unicameral Parliament, which sometimes affects classification rankings.

“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he explained.

He emphasized that the introduction of live television coverage of parliamentary proceedings has greatly enhanced transparency, accountability, and public oversight of the House’s activities.

“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.

The Majority Leader expressed optimism that the continued modernization of parliamentary operations and increased public access to legislative work will further strengthen Ghana’s democratic credentials and position Parliament as a model institution across Africa.
