The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven persons in connection with a highway robbery that occurred last year along the Tamale–Buipe highway, during which a member of the Council of State was attacked.

The suspects — Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila, and Haruna Safianu — were arrested on January 11, 2026, following weeks of intelligence-led investigations.

Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

According to her, the attack occurred on July 21, 2025, when the victim was travelling along the Tamale–Buipe highway and was ambushed by six armed men.

The assailants reportedly made away with several personal belongings, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, laptops, and other valuables.

“The arrests form part of intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling highway robbery networks across the country,” COP Donkor stated.

She further disclosed that in a separate operation, police arrested five suspects in connection with another robbery incident at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region.

The suspects — Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe (alias Salifu), Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman, and Bukari Sule (alias Taylor) — were arrested on different days following investigations into a robbery that occurred on December 2, 2025.

COP Donkor explained that the suspects, together with other accomplices, allegedly blocked the Goaso–Tepa road while armed and attacked unsuspecting road users.

She noted that investigations into both cases are ongoing as police work to retrieve stolen items and identify additional accomplices.

The CID Director-General urged the public to remain vigilant, prioritise personal safety while travelling, and avoid sharing sensitive information with strangers as police intensify efforts to curb criminal activities nationwide
