The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate suspension of post-retirement contract appointments for retired public service staff.
This directive was contained in an official statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama.
According to the statement, all requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.
The move forms part of efforts by the government to streamline public sector employment and create opportunities for younger professionals within the civil and public service space.
The statement emphasized that the directive takes effect immediately, and Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and other public sector institutions have been advised to comply accordingly.
Although no particular explanation was provided for the abrupt change in policy, it is anticipated that the suspension will have an effect on a number of organizations that customarily depend on the experience of retired professionals through contract extensions.
Though, it may also raise worries about the possible loss of institutional memory and experienced leadership in some crucial sectors, analysts think this decision could herald a renewed focus on youth employment and succession planning within the public sector.
