The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has declared its full support for the ongoing strike action by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), describing the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer as unjustified and calling for his immediate reinstatement within three working days.
The Association announced its position in a statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026, following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC).
According to the GMA, it fully endorses the decision by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) to withdraw services until the suspension of the CEO is reversed.
The Association also criticised the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accusing him of making comments capable of inciting public sentiment against healthcare professionals.
Defending the actions taken by the management of KATH prior to the suspension, the GMA stated that the temporary halt in new emergency admissions and the redirection of patients to nearby health facilities were necessary measures implemented in the interest of patient safety.
The Association explained that the decisions were in line with accepted standards of healthcare administration and emergency management practices.
According to the statement, the measures did not amount to abandoning patients or disregarding directives from the President.
“Rather, the actions redirected patients and ensured they received safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH,” the statement noted.
The GMA further revealed that the coordinated intervention involving the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, healthcare facilities, and health workers helped decongest the Accident and Emergency Centre and made it possible for the hospital to resume new admissions within 24 hours.
Based on these developments, the Association maintained that the initial query issued to the CEO and the subsequent directive for his suspension lacked justification.
“Council, therefore, is of the considered view that the initial query issued and subsequent directive for suspension were without basis and ought not to have been occasioned,” portions of the statement said.
The GMA is therefore demanding the immediate withdrawal of the suspension directive and the reinstatement of the CEO within three working days.
The Association also reiterated its unwavering support for KADA’s industrial action, stressing that the strike will continue until the suspension is reversed and concrete measures are taken to improve emergency healthcare capacity within the Kumasi enclave.
