GES warns SHS heads against illegal WASSCE registration

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a firm warning to heads of Senior High Schools and Technical Schools over the unlawful registration of ineligible students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The caution, contained in a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of the Public Relations Unit, was released in Accra on January 8, 2026.

The GES expressed deep concern about emerging reports suggesting that some school authorities are allegedly registering Form Two students and even private candidates for the examination in exchange for fees.

According to the statement, such actions violate the regulations governing WASSCE registration.

The GES clarified that only final-year students, whose academic progression from Form One to Form Three can be properly traced and verified in the school’s records, are eligible to be registered by school authorities.

The Service emphasised that no head of school or official is permitted, under any circumstance, to register Form Two students or private candidates for the exam.

Describing the act as gross misconduct and an abuse of office, especially when money is collected to facilitate these illegal registrations, the GES warned that the practice must stop immediately.

It further cautioned that any school head or official found complicit will face stringent sanctions. Disciplinary actions, the statement noted, will be enforced strictly in accordance with GES guidelines and the regulations of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), with no exceptions.
