Asanteman mourns the passing of Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

The Asante Kingdom is in mourning following the death of the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, a revered traditional leader and Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.

He passed away at the age of 86, bringing to a close a distinguished 26-year reign.

In keeping with Asante tradition, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty have formally notified the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the passing of the Silver Stool occupant.

The solemn announcement was made at the Manhyia Palace, led by the Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, amidst traditional rites and a spirit of deep reflection.

Born Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was a respected lawyer and economist prior to his ascension to the stool.

He notably served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), bringing a rare blend of academic excellence and cultural insight to his role as chief.

As Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II held the position of second-in-command within the Asante hierarchy, often representing the Asantehene in matters of state and tradition.

His leadership was characterised by diplomacy, cultural preservation, and an unwavering commitment to unity and development.

The late chief made his final public appearance at the recent Akwasidae festival in Mampong, where he strongly condemned tribalism and criticised political actors for promoting ethnic divisions during a protest over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II leaves behind a profound legacy that bridges tradition and modern governance, earning him widespread respect within Ghana’s chieftaincy system and beyond.

Tributes have begun pouring in from across the nation, recognising his lifetime of service to the Asante Kingdom and the broader Ghanaian society.

Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in accordance with royal protocols in the coming days.
