The General Overseer and Head Pastor of the Counsel of God Church, Rev. John Osei, has expressed strong support for the directive by the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, instructing the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that teachers use local languages as part of the medium of instruction in all Ghanaian schools.
Rev. Osei said the move is a step in the right direction and will help improve teaching and learning, especially at the basic level. He emphasized that if Ghana continues to use its local languages up to the university level, it will enhance national development.
“A study has shown that countries that use their own languages in education tend to develop faster and become more successful,” he noted.
Speaking in an interview with GhNewsday Online, Rev. Osei explained that in countries such as China, Korea, and other developed nations, the people communicate primarily in their local languages and treat English as a secondary language.
He therefore commended the Education Minister for the initiative and urged him to go a step further by ensuring that teachers across all levels use English only as a second language in instruction.
