The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has confirmed that a microlight aircraft crashed near a school park in Tema Community One on Monday afternoon, killing the two people on board.
In a statement, the authority said the aircraft, registered 9G-ADV, was flying from Ho to Accra and was expected to arrive at 15:20 Zulu time. According to the GCAA, the last radio contact with the aircraft was recorded at 14:18 Zulu time.
“There were two persons on board,” the statement noted.
The aircraft eventually crashed at the Oninku Drive School Park at Site 17 in Tema, close to the TMA Daycare facility.
Witnesses said thick smoke billowed into the air from the burning aircraft shortly after the crash, drawing the attention of residents in the area. Emergency services quickly moved to the scene to manage the situation and secure the area.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the cause of the crash.
